What a whirlwind week I’ve had! A lot of things are bubbling for me right now. When I started this site and this blog, I made it clear that I want to become a full-time freelance writer within the next two years. But I don’t know about that anymore; at the rate I’m going, I could be a full-time freelancer much sooner than that!
This past week, I met one of my monthly goals: secure a byline in a prominent blog. The post I wrote hasn’t gone live yet, but an article I wrote for a real estate marketing agency was approved and paid for; I’ll post a link to it next week.
Securing bylines is my #1 priority. I can do all the ghostwriting and behind-the-scenes work in the world, but that will never raise my profile. If I want to be a successful freelance writer, I need to have multiple byline pieces associated with many different publications. That way, when someone wants to hire me, I will be able to point them to various blogs that they already are aware of and say, “Here you go, I wrote this piece here.” Nothing is more powerful than a portfolio that shows that other people believed in you and you delivered them results. Even if you’re writing is beyond stellar, without a portfolio of published works it won’t mean much.
I was also commissioned to write a cool piece about the underground world of “adult” video games. I submitted my first draft for that yesterday, so I’m waiting to hear back on notes and edits. But I have to admit; I’m pretty proud of it. I hope it makes a big splash when it eventually goes live!
There’s also a few other things going on in the background: a few interviews have happened, a few are scheduled, and some contracts are going back and forth. Honestly, I’m starting to get concerned that I may be biting off more than I can chew! I just have to keep steering a straight ship and hope I don’t get overwhelmed.
On the personal front, it’s officially time to start thinking about Christmas. That means presents, decorations, and holiday parties. I’m exhausted just thinking about it. But honestly, I do love this time of year. But that could just be because I traditionally take the last half of December completely off work. Maybe that’s it. Although with the rate things are going with my freelancing I don’t know if that will be possible this year! We’ll just have to wait and see.
