Last week I promised that I would finally divulge the big secret news I’ve been hiding. Without further ado, here it is: I am now a staff writer at Android Authority. Over the past few weeks, I have been slowly letting go of my other responsibilities to make room for this full-time writing job. It’s incredibly exciting, and quite unbelievable how far I’ve come in the writing world in such a short period of time.
Now that everything is sealed away and official, I can tell the whole story. Android Authority posted some job openings on their site late last year and, being that I’ve always been a huge fan of the site, I applied. Part of the application process was to make a 1-minute video introduction. If I remember correctly, the application said that you didn’t have to submit a video, but anyone who did would be put in a higher tier automatically. So duh, I made a video, and here it is:
Honestly, I only came up with the idea for the video about an hour before I did it. The whole thing took maybe 30 minutes to shoot, edit, and post to YouTube. I assumed that a pretty geeky website is staffed with geeky people just like me, and thought they’d appreciate it. I filled out the rest of the app and sent it in.
And that was that, I didn’t hear back for months. I assumed my app was simply not what they were looking for, or that my video idea had backfired and painted me as a total moron.
But, as you now know, that was not the case. I eventually did get word back that they loved my app and especially the video. Apparently, the team shared the video with the entire staff, and everyone was talking about it. It was a very humbling phone call.
The editing team asked me to write a few articles to see how well I would do with their content creation systems. I did, and things went well. Then they asked me to write a long-form piece, which ended up being the one about how the form factor and design of smartphones peaked in 2007. That article was pretty successful, so they asked me to do more. I did a little here, a little there, doing my best to manage my time with my other clients, so I didn’t get burned out.
Then, in late December, I got a phone call from the Editor-In-Chief and co-founder of the site. He made me a full-time offer, and I happily accepted.
Since then, I’ve been clearing up my schedule to make room for this new job. My official start day is this coming Monday, and I couldn’t be more excited!
Be sure to visit this blog space each week so you can hear more about my new life writing about geeky tech stuff! Have a great weekend everyone and thanks for your support.
